Santorini
Island Greece
Santorini is undoubtedly one of the most striking
natural sights
in the Mediterranean. The enfant terrible of the Cyclades is one of only two
Greek islands formed by the tip of an old
volcano (the other is Milos, which is
much less spectacular), which is why it bears little resemblance to any of its
neighbors. It suffered a huge volcanic eruption when the whole of the centre of
the island was submerged - this may well be the origin of the myth of the lost
city of Atlantis. Plato spoke of it in his writings, but archaeologists are not
totally convinced of the truth of the story. The island is an unforgettable
sight, with its high cliff soaring from 60 meters up to 120 meters, displaying a
geological cross-section of layers of black and red ash, with the town at the
summit only accessible on foot or on the back of a mule. The island's
shape is
clearly that of a volcanic crater, with the cliffs to the west overhanging the
sunken crater, and a gentle slope that runs down to the island's east coast. It
is its un usual nature that makes it such a memorable place to visit.
